Physical models have formed an integral part of masonry arch research over the last few decades. This current project involves physical modelling at two different scales; at the University of Salford, full-scale physical models are being constructed within a 8m wide by 2m high stiff, perspex sided tank. These are 3m span, 2 ring mortared brickwork arches with a rise of 0.75m. Arches will be backfilled either with crushed limestone or clay, before being subjected to loading. At the University of Sheffield, 1/4 (medium) scale brickwork arches are being constructed and tested within a specially commissioned test rig.

These pages will document the development of these tests and will present some output.
